From gift wrapping to person wrapping! – experience some of Japan’s finest wrapping traditions with Kazuko Iwai. The classes will cover furoshiki – (arguably one of the most sustainable way of wrapping gifts using recycled and recyclable cloth) and Kimono (traditional Japanese costume). The word kimono literally means "thing to wear on the shoulders" but this traditional Japanese dress is far more complex than its name suggests! It might be stunning to look at but to get into it? - That’s another matter. There are layers of undergarments ties, ties and more ties! In these classes you will learn all about this iconic garment including the different types of kimono (there are many), when they are worn and how you get into them! Have fun trying one on if you wish!
Furoshiki is widely used for wrapping and carrying items in Japan where it is valued for its practicality as well as its beauty. This course will focus on how to use furoshiki for wrapping different objects in a variety of shapes and on using regular household items and fabric that you might have already at home. Kazuko’s classes are fun, participatory and packed full of personal stories as well as insightful cultural observations and knowledge.
