Description

Turkiye's history, rich and varied, stretches back tens of thousands of years, encompassing ancient non-Turkic civilizations like the Hittites and Phrygians, followed by the rise of the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine empires. The arrival of Seljuk Turks in the 11th century, initiated Turkification, leading to the Ottoman Empire, which crumbled after World War I, paving the way for the establishment of the modern republic. In this lecture series we explore this country that straddles Europe and Asia and discuss its unique viewpoint on world events. Michael Couch has been teaching community education courses for over a decade. With an academic background in Philosophy, Classical Studies, Education and History, he recently completed his PhD in the History of Philosophy of Education in New Zealand. He enjoys learning new topics and incorporates passion and wry humour into all his lectures.
