      Description

Join us for two perspectives on this fantastic period of Scottish art:

      1. “Old Guard versus Avant Garde”: John Maxwell will provide an overview of the quiet but seminal creative revolution which possibly began with the Chicago Exposition of 1893 and the Secessions of Munich and Venice. He will also discuss Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau in Britain and Europe.

      2. “Late 19th and early 20th Century Scottish Art”: John Richardson will describe the contributions made by The Colourists and The Glasgow Boys to the development of a Scots Avant Garde.

This set of talks was originally prepared for the North Canterbury U3A Art Appreciation Group; of which both Johns are active members. John Maxwell studied both History and Art formally and, against a richly varied professional backdrop since, has retained lifelong interest in both. John Richardson is a biologist by training, inclination and occupation but, particularly in retirement, has developed a keen interest in art, particularly in Scottish Art History.
