Description

What is a Hungarian? European? Asian? Magyar? Though peopled through ancient history, the Hungarian Plain has been a crossroad for various peoples leading to the foundation of the Hungarian state in the late 9th century. Barely conquered by the Romans (raiding them instead) Hungary has always fought for independence from European trends. The medieval Kingdom of Hungary was a regional power, shaping events in all its neighbours from the Austrians to Romanians and Ottomans, until its rise and fall as Austria-Hungary in 19th century. This course will explore the history, art, culture, and language of this influential state - including modern social and political events.
