Fascinated by science and the way our world works? Like variety? Then this course is for you. Speakers from quite different backgrounds will give us insights into their specialist subjects:
24th November - 45 years of exploration geology – Davis Manhire
Most of my work has been in the field in New Zealand and overseas (including South America) looking for oil, gas, coal, gold and now phosphate. The best memories are of people and places; discoveries have been a bonus.
1st Dec - Nitrous Oxide - an important greenhouse gas – Paul Broady
How much is emitted globally? Where does it come from? How much is emitted in Aotearoa New Zealand? Microbes are key actors. This will lead us into discussion of the global nitrogen cycle and how this has been massively perturbed by our activities. But don't despair as we can change this rather dire situation for the better, including making a shift towards healthier diets.
8Th Dec - Tails from the crypt: where wildlife mingles with the afterlife – Simon Pollard There’s more than one mammal that make cemeteries their home.
Join Simon to hear about the surprising number of animals that keep
cemeteries alive.
